Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, today announced Ireland’s participation in a pan-european research initiative focussed on the issue of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). This collaborative venture aims to more effectively combat antimicrobial resistance through a One Health approach.
Minister McConalogue commented:
"Representatives from my department, are joining delegates from the other Member States, the European Commission and policymakers from across 30 countries in Paris today, 13 February 2024 to officially launch the second Joint Action on Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare-Associated Infections (EU-JAMRAI 2)."
The Minister added:
"My department is responsible for overall co-ordination of the project at national level, and will oversee the distribution of €1.2 million in funding for the collaborative research to be carried out at University College Dublin, University of Galway, Maynooth University, Teagasc, the Irish Equine Centre and at this department’s National Veterinary laboratory."
EU-JAMRAI 2 is funded under the EU4Health programme which places a strong focus on translating innovative One Health research into practice on the ground. The overall level of funding underscores the priority given to combatting antimicrobial resistance by the European Union.
Minister of State with responsibility for Research and Development, Martin Heydon stated that:
“This European project will enhance Ireland’s reputation in the research arena, and forge strong future partnerships.”
Minister McConalogue concluded that:
"This extensive research project will provide important knowledge in the area of One Health, improving collaboration at a European level to achieve sustainable and effective measures to reduce AMR."
