South Donegal Jobs and Career Advice Fair to take place on Thursday, April 7th 2016

The Department of Social Protection (DSP), together with the Donegal Local Development Company Ltd (DLDC), will host a Jobs and Career Advice Fair in the Abbey Hotel, Donegal Town on Thursday, 7th April from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Attendance is free to all.
The ‘Jobs & Career Advice Fair’ will provide jobseekers the opportunity to connect with employers offering full and part time positions. There will also be an opportunity to explore new careers with information on a wide range of upskilling initiatives and training. The event will also be of interest to anyone who is interested in progressing on to further study.
Jim McGuinness, (Former Manager to Donegal GAA Senior Football Team), today offered his support to the initiative. “I see it as a great opportunity for people to source employment and see what’s on offer for their future career. The benefits of positive thinking are well documented. A ‘can-do’ attitude is the way forward. One of the secrets of achieving your goals is to recognise that it is going to be challenging. The truth is that if you believe you can, you probably can—you just need a plan and be prepared for some hard work along the way. The Jobs & Career Advice Fair 2016 is a great opportunity to start your plan. ”
Declan Doherty, Employer Engagement Manager for Donegal, said: “Finding the right job or career can be an exciting and challenging task. The Fair promises to be a very useful day for adults interested in returning to work or education, and to offer pathways for people living in South Donegal. We are delighted to be jointly hosting this event with the DLDC.”
Padraic Fingleton, CEO of Donegal Local Development Company, commented: “It is a great opportunity for local people, to meet local businesses, some of whom are currently recruiting. It also offers the opportunity to explore what educational options are on offer, to take time to gain information on up-skilling and look at potential new career opportunities.”
Anne Curran, DSP Case Officer, Donegal Town Intreo, explained how the role of the Department of Social Protection has expanded in recent years. She said: “In addition to providing weekly payments to jobseekers, the Department, through its local Intreo Centres, also offers a range of education, training and personal development programmes to help jobseekers to get back to work.”
A range of employers, education, training and support providers will be available on the day at the one-stop-shop ‘Jobs & Career Advice Fair’, to give advice and guidance. Information will be available on current job vacancies along with representatives from the EURES Cross Border Partnership who will provide jobseekers with details of job opportunities, both cross border and in the wider European labour market.

The Department of Social Protection’s Intreo Employment Services provides a customised service to jobseekers based on a person’s skills, experience and qualifications. A tailored progression plan will be devised and agreed between the client and their Case Officer. The service will support jobseekers in their own efforts to find work and to undertake training and development programmes to maximise their access to opportunities.
Intreo Employment Services, through its network of offices, is the access point to all training and employment programmes for jobseekers where appropriate career guidance can be provided.
The Department also offers a suite of services and financial incentives that can assist employers in recruiting staff from the register of those who are unemployed. Donegal Local Development Company Ltd is a local development organisation that delivers a range of national programmes in Donegal (excluding the Inishowen Peninsula) including rural development and social inclusion programmes. EURES (European Employment Service) is a European-wide initiative that has been in place since 1993 and assists jobseekers take up employment within the EU. It is a network of all the public employment services in the European Union and the European Economic Area. Through EURES, public employment services share their employment vacancies and services with each other.
Any such employment opportunities brought to the attention of jobseekers by the Department of Social Protection outside of Ireland are completely voluntary and people who do not avail of any such opportunities will not lose their social welfare entitlements here. It is an opportunity for jobseekers in Ireland to seek work in other EU countries in the wider European market. Equally, it provides jobseekers abroad with an opportunity to find work with companies based here in Ireland where such vacancies cannot be filled by jobseekers in Ireland.
