Damien English T.D., Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development today (31st August 2018) officially opened Meath County Council’s new 32 unit housing scheme at Connaught Grove, Athboy.
Speaking today, Minister English welcomed the delivery of the scheme, which addresses the needs of 32 households on the Council’s social housing list.
The scheme consists of a mix of high quality 2, 3 and 4 bed houses, and all units are now tenanted. The scheme is supported by funding of €8.175 million from the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government.
Minister English acknowledged the contribution of Meath County Council in addressing the challenges faced in the housing sector and noted that this scheme providing 32 new homes is in addition to a further 19 direct build projects by the Council at various stages of construction. The additional 19 schemes will deliver in the region of 340 units between now and 2020.
Minister English said “this pipeline of construction projects is a crucial element of the Council’s strategy to meet the ambitious social housing targets set under Rebuilding Ireland through Build, Acquisition and Leasing schemes over the course of 2018 - 2021. I look forward to announcing further new projects by the Council in the future.”
The Minister commended the elected members and the Chief Executive for their support and commitment to this project and the wider development programme under Rebuilding Ireland.
The Minister concluded that “Rebuilding Ireland is a €6 billion, multi-annual, broadly based action plan which seeks to increase the overall supply of new homes to 25,000 per annum by 2020; deliver an additional 50,000 social housing units in the period to 2021; and meet the housing needs of an additional 87,000 households through the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme and the Rental Accommodation Scheme.”
