The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, has expressed her condolences to the family and friends of the author, editor, poet, critic and academic Seamus Deane.
“It is a day of great sadness for Irish Literature. Seamus Deane leaves behind a powerful legacy that will no doubt inspire generations of authors and poets to come.
“Best known for his novel Reading in the Dark, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 1996 and won the Irish Times Literary Award in 1997, Seamus was also a director of the Field Day theatre company and was general editor of the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing.
“I wish to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Seamus, as well as the people of Derry at this very difficult time.
"Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
