The Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Leo Varadkar TD today appointed Mr. Jeremy Godfrey as Chairperson of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) with effect from 1 January 2022.
The Tánaiste said:
“Ensuring competition and strong consumer protections are very much in the public interest. Both keep the cost of living down, make sure customers have choice and are not exploited. It’s also important for Government in ensuring that we have plenty of competition for public work. This raises quality and reduces cost. That’s why we need robust laws and a powerful and efficient regulator. Competition and consumer law is being strengthened at present and I want to ensure that the enforcement of these stronger law has real teeth.
“Jeremy joins the CCPC at a time of major change for the organisation, as it takes on increased enforcement powers through the forthcoming enactment of both the Competition (Amendment) Bill and the Consumer Rights Bill including, in the case of the former, the power to apply administrative sanctions for breaches of competition law. These changes will of course bring challenges, which I am confident Jeremy will meet head on.
“It’s very welcome to see someone of Jeremy’s calibre join the CCPC as its Chairperson. His experience and expertise will be invaluable over the coming months and years and I wish him the very best of luck with the role. I’d also like to thank Isolde Goggin for her significant contribution as outgoing Chairperson. Her dedication and hard work is greatly appreciated.”
Prior to joining ComReg, Mr. Godfrey spent almost 20 years working in Hong Kong. He served as Government Chief Information Officer for the Hong Kong Government, as a partner in an international firm of management and technology consultants and in a variety of strategy and marketing roles in the telecommunications sector.
Jeremy started his career as a civil servant in the UK Department of Trade and Industry.

The CCPC plays a critical role in Irish society, responsible for enforcing competition and consumer protection law and ultimately ensuring markets work better for consumers and businesses. Over the past number of years, it has responded to a number of challenges particularly Brexit and COVID-19 and I want to commend Isolde Goggin for her dedicated work in this regard.
