The 2022 SuperValu TidyTowns Awards for the North West and West region were presented today (Wednesday 5 April) at a prize-giving ceremony in Kilronan Castle in Co Roscommon. Each of the worthy winners were presented with their awards by Frank Feighan on behalf of Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys and Richard Lennon, Regional Manager with SuperValu.
At the ceremony, Deputy Feighan congratulated all of the winners and referenced the recent launch of the 2023 SuperValu TidyTowns competition, which this year celebrates 65 years of environmental and community initiatives.
Deputy Feighan said:
“I am delighted to be in a position to attend the awards on behalf of Minister Humphreys and I encourage committees to avail of the €1.4 million in grant funding that Minister Humphreys announced at the results of the 2022 competition last October. This funding is to assist committees in preparing for the 2023 competition. All eligible committees will have recently received an application form for the grant and it should be returned as soon as possible to take full advantage of the funding. Since 2017, Minister Humphrey’s department has provided over €8 million to TidyTowns groups in direct funding. Groups who have not as yet returned their application form should do so in order to avail of these funds.”
Deputy Feighan continued:
“In recent years, thousands of individuals have volunteered with TidyTown groups and in doing so have made our country a place that we can all be proud of. I have such admiration for the volunteers from the eight counties in the North West and West region and for all the volunteers who have put their shoulder to the wheel in the last 65 years to make our communities more attractive, inclusive and sustainable places for everyone.”
SuperValu celebrates 32 years of sponsorship of the TidyTowns competition this year. Deputy Feighan applauded the support SuperValu shows at a local and national level and for the initiatives they have brought about in recent years in partnership with the Department of Rural and Community Development, helping to ensure the competition flourishes and continues to have a real impact on communities throughout the country.
Interest in the SuperValu TidyTowns competition has been increasing since the pandemic with 882 entries to the competition in 2022.
Richard Lennon, Regional Manager with SuperValu, stated:
“2023 sees the return of the SuperValu TidyTowns competition for its 32nd year, which continues to grow in popularity year on year. Not only does the competition bring local communities together, but it enables them to work together for the greater good – by improving sustainability, biodiversity and conservation initiatives within towns and villages across Ireland. It’s important to acknowledge the efforts made by each TidyTowns committee throughout the year, who drive forward their community engagement, instilling pride of place. I would like to commend all involved for their continued support and commitment to the SuperValu TidyTowns competition.”
The competition has been running since 1958 and is administered by the Department of Rural and Community Development. The competition has been sponsored by SuperValu since 1992. Keadue in Co. Roscommon won the regional title and a full list of all of today’s prize winner’s is below.
