Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, today received an update on the ongoing work of the Food Vision Tillage Group from its Chair, Matt Dempsey. The update was provided as part of the eighth meeting of the Food Vision High Level Implementation Committee.
Minister McConalogue said:
“I would like to thank Matt Dempsey and the members of the Food Vision Tillage Group for their ongoing work, and I look forward to receiving the final report in due course. It will be an important step in the process to sustainably grow the tillage sector to 400,000ha by 2030, while also identifying other opportunities for the sector. The Group have been considering how to develop the sector to take advantage of potential growth in high-value food and drink markets, including the expansion of organic tillage; to further increase the domestic production of grain and protein crops for use in the livestock sector and more integration of sectors generally. The group has also sought to identify opportunities that will improve its efficiency and competitiveness; and, to further improve its environmental footprint."
The Minister added:
“It is essential that we find a pathway to grow and develop this important sector. It is clear that the Group, led by Matt Dempsey, are making substantial progress and I look forward to their report."
Other topics covered at the Food Vision High Level Implementation Committee included a discussion on the new National Strategy for Horticulture 2023-2027, and its next steps, which was led by the Minister of State with responsibility for Horticulture, Pippa Hackett.
Minister of State Hackett said:
“The Strategy highlights the potential of the horticulture sector to play a key role in the achievement of our vision for the Irish agrifood sector, both economically and environmentally. I look forward to working with all stakeholders to implement the Strategy so that we can deliver on that immense potential.”
The Committee also received an update on the work of the Food Vision Environmental Working Sub-Group, which included a presentation of the newly launched National Fertiliser Database. Those at the meeting acknowledged the benefits of the new National Fertiliser Database, as is evidenced by the more than 120,000 farmers who have signed up to it.
