EU adopts sanctions against Russia

On 23 February, the EU adopted a package of sanctions to respond to the decision by the Russian Federation to recognise the non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine as independent entities, and the subsequent decision to send Russian troops into these areas. The sanctions package came fully into effect on Thursday, 24 February.
The sanctions package comprises targeted restrictive measures on a number of individuals and entities, restrictions on economic relations with the non-government controlled areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, and financial restrictions against Russia.
In the light of the very serious developments overnight, the EU will now move forward with a second, even more extensive sanctions package. This package will be discussed by EU leaders at a meeting of the European Council this evening, 24 February.
Speaking about the introduction of the first sanctions package, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Simon Coveney, said:
"Ireland, along with the other EU Member States, is unwavering in its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Russia’s illegal actions have left the EU with no choice but to introduce comprehensive and extensive sanctions. We have made clear our support for these measures, even though they will not be cost-free for Ireland or for other EU Member States. Following the most recent escalation by Russia, a second package of hard-hitting sanctions will be introduced very shortly, in coordination with our international partners."
