Mr Michael Ring TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development today welcomed the launch of the government’s Climate Action Plan.
In welcoming the plan, Minister Ring said:
“This ambitious Climate Action Plan is key to ensuring the sustainability of communities throughout Ireland and it also importantly acknowledges the distinctive challenges that may be faced by rural communities. I believe that actively engaging with, and supporting, communities is key to the success of this Plan.”
Speaking about how his department is supporting the plan Minister Ring said:
“Communities and government departments have an important role to play in helping to achieve Ireland's climate and energy targets. One of my department’s key goals is to help create sustainable communities to benefit us all. We are already achieving that by funding projects that encourage people to live and work in rural Ireland. Schemes such as the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, LEADER, Town and Village and Tidy Towns are encouraging, and actively supporting, sustainable communities throughout the country. They are achieving this by funding projects that protect the rural environment, preserve habitats and species, maintain water quality and ensure a more balanced development of rural areas.”
The Minister concluded by saying:
“To assist in delivering the government’s Climate Action Plan my department will also review criteria for the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund to ensure low carbon investments are prioritised. We will also look at other funding supports to increase compatibility with climate objectives. We look forward to actively engaging with communities to deliver this Plan.”
