President of the Eurogroup and Minister for Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, is in Brussels today (Monday, 9 December) where he will chair the December Eurogroup meeting.
Continuing the series of exchanges on global economic developments, the Eurogroup, in inclusive format, will welcome the Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom, Rachel Reeves. This will be the Chancellor’s first attendance at a Eurogroup meeting where the discussion will focus on the global economic outlook and shared challenges.
Following this, Ministers will discuss macro-economic developments and policy coordination in the euro area, including hearing from the International Monetary Fund on recent euro area economic performance and outlook.
Looking ahead to the first full annual implementation cycle of the EU’s revised fiscal rules, Ministers will hold a discussion on Draft Budgetary Plans and the euro area budgetary situation. The Eurogroup is expected to issue a statement following this discussion to reflect an agreed fiscal stance on budgetary policy for next year.
Ahead of the meeting Minister Donohoe said:
“I look forward to welcoming Chancellor Reeves to our Eurogroup meeting later today. The UK is our close neighbour, friend and partner. Close coordination with the United Kingdom will help Ireland and Europe promote a global economy which is key to providing a stable path to growth, building resilience and inclusivity.
"I look forward to an extensive discussion on the budgetary situation in the euro area and prospects for 2025. We will look to agree a Eurogroup statement to set out budgetary policy priorities for the year ahead.”
