The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 1,751 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
As of 8am today, 343 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 59 are in ICU.
Reporting on the number of notified COVID-19 cases using the HSE-HPSC Computerised Infectious Disease Reporting (CIDR) recommenced on 2 September 2021.
CIDR, as the national surveillance system, is the definitive source for validated data on COVID-19 cases in Ireland which meet Irish and European case definitions.
Prior to the cyber-attack on the HSE IT systems, the reported epidemiology of COVID-19, including the daily number of COVID-19 cases, was based on notifications to the HSE-HPSC (CIDR) system.
The cyber-attack prevented the routine notification of cases, deaths and outbreaks of COVID-19 to CIDR. To ensure the continued surveillance and reporting of COVID-19 cases, an alternative approach was introduced by HPSC. This was based on a data extract from the HSE COVID Care Tracker (the IT system that records the data collected at telephone interviews with COVID-19 cases and their close contacts).
The number of cases reported from CIDR for the period affected by the cyber-attack will differ from the estimates reported based on interim arrangements.
On a day-to-day basis the daily number of cases reported from CIDR will differ from the number of positive tests the previous day. The daily number of positive lab tests may include repeat tests of the same person and the timing of when results from different labs are uploaded to CIDR also has an impact.
Due to data validation and slightly different upload schedules, the cumulative number of cases reported from CIDR, from 15 May to end of August 2021, has decreased by approximately 1,700 cases compared to what has been reported based on CCT and interim arrangements. This reduction in the number of cases amounts to approximately 1.7% of the total cases reported based on CCT and interim arrangements for the relevant period.
Full details on the impact of the recommencement of reporting from CIDR can be found on the HPSC website: https://www.hpsc.ie/a-z/respiratory/coronavirus/novelcoronavirus/surveillance/recommencementofreportingfromcidr/
