President of the Eurogroup and Minister for Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, is in Brussels today (Monday 20 January) where he will chair the first Eurogroup meeting of the year.
Ministers will engage in a strategic political discussion on the euro area's key policy priorities. The Commission will present the key economic priorities of the new Commission College. It will also present its draft Euro Area Recommendation on which Ministers will exchange views.
Ministers will also discuss the use of innovative technologies, such as tokenisation and distributed-ledger-technology, in wholesale settlement of transactions. Mr Hyun Song Shin, Economic Adviser and Head of the Monetary and Economic Department at the Bank of International Settlements, will contribute to the discussion. Following this, Ministers will have a further opportunity to discuss the development of the digital euro project, including an update from the European Central Bank.
The new French Minister for Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, Éric Lombard, and the new Lithuanian Minister of Finance, Rimantas Šadžius, will be invited to present the policy priorities of their respective governments.
Ahead of the meeting Minister Donohoe said:
“I look forward to our first meeting in 2025. The start of a New Year and a new European policy cycle provides us with a good opportunity to set out the priorities and challenges for the euro area. The beginning of a year is an opportunity to reflect, reset and refocus our efforts.”
