Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue, today launched the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development 2030.
Speaking at the IFA Annual Aquaculture Conference, the Minister made a keynote address to a highly engaged stakeholder group on developments in the aquaculture sector, where he focused on the importance of the European Maritime Fisheries & Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) and the positive benefits that the funding schemes he provides can bring to the sector.
Minister McConalogue launched the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development, a Strategic plan providing a vision for Irish aquaculture in 2030.
The Minister stated:
“With the publication of the NSPSA I am putting in place the necessary building blocks for the continued development of a sustainable, profitable, competitive and market-focused aquaculture sector in Ireland, positioning it to make the maximum long-term economic and social contribution to our coastal communities and Ireland as a whole, while optimising environmental performance and supporting the natural capital upon which it depends.”
The Minister further commented:
“This Plan sets the path for the Irish Aquaculture sector so that it is resilient, competitive and is a global standard in sustainability and quality. With the implementation of this Plan, I believe the aquaculture sector has the ability to build and maintain its competitive edge into the future.”
The NSPSA was developed through consultation and the Minister thanked stakeholders including the IFA for their input. The launch of the NSPSA was welcomed by the aquaculture industry.
