The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, and the Government Chief Whip and the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers, today announced the launch of a recruitment process to appoint members to the Irish Language Services Advisory Committee.
It follows the enactment of the Official Languages (Amendment) Act 2021 at the end of last year and the provision therein that the Advisory Committee be established no later than 6 months after its enactment. The functions of the Advisory Committee are laid out in the Act, including the publication of a National Plan for the increase in the provision of public services through the medium of Irish. The preparation of the National Plan is in line with the overall objective of the Act that 20 percent of new recruits to the public service be Irish speakers no later than 31 December 2030. Two members will be appointed to the Advisory Committee from this competition - one representative of Gaeltacht Language Planning Areas and one representative of areas of the State that are not Gaeltacht Language Planning Areas.
Speaking today, Minister Martin and Minister for State Chambers said that they were very happy to announce that the recruitment process to the Committee has started because of how important the work of the Committee will be in the years ahead as the Act is implemented.
The closing date for applications is 3pm on 5 April 2022.
