The Minister for Media, Tourism, Arts, Culture, Sport and the Gaeltacht, Catherine Martin TD, announced today that she has approved the preliminary business case for the Crawford Art Gallery redevelopment project together with an allocation of €3.32 million to cover the costs involved in the next stage of the development.
The Minister said:
"I am delighted that work is progressing on the Crawford Art Gallery redevelopment project. The investment will facilitate a redevelopment which will ensure that the Crawford Art Gallery can continue to play a significant part in the cultural life of the country."
Through Project Ireland 2040, the government is investing €460 million in Ireland’s National Cultural Institutions to revamp and modernise their facilities both in terms of visitor experience and storage of our national collections.
The Crawford is housed in a historic building which needs significant enhancement to meet the evolving demands of a dynamic National Cultural Institution.
Minister Martin noted:
"The Crawford Art Gallery is the only National Cultural Institution operating in its entirety outside Dublin. This gives it a unique perspective and position. I would like to thank the Chair and Director and team in the Crawford for their continuing work in delivering an artistic programme which engages and challenges."
