While visiting Ceantar na nOileán today, the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers, opened a new stand developed by Cumann Peile Naomh Anna at Páirc an Mháimín in Leitir Móir. Minister Chambers' department previously approved a grant of €269,309 - equivalent to 80% of the cost of the work on the stand.
During his visit to Conamara, the Minister of State visited the department's offices in Na Forbacha and the offices of Údarás na Gaeltachta - where he met with board members. While in Ceantar na nOileán and An Cheathrú Rua he also took the opportunity to visit the offices of Muintearas Teo in Tír an Fhia, Ionad Oidhreachta Leitir Mealláin agus Gharumna and the campus of Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, Ollscoil na Gaillimhe in An Cheathrú Rua - where he met with international students studying Irish through department-funded scholarships.
Opening the stand, Minister of State Chambers said:
“Cumann Peile Naomh Anna is a hugely active club and it is important that such a facility is available in this strong Gaeltacht area to ensure that the local people, especially the young, have every opportunity to preserve the Irish language and promote it in a natural way when participating in sporting events. Ceantar na nOileán is one of the strongest Gaeltacht areas in the country in terms of the daily use of Irish. I congratulate Cumann Peile Naomh Anna on their contribution to the use of Irish among young people in particular and to the implementation of the language plan I launched in this area in 2021. It's timely that Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta is taking place here this year and it is a source of pride for the local community to showcase such a great facility and their rich language. I look forward to attending the match between Leitir Móir and An Cheathrú Rua tonight.”
