Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue today announced the allocation of over €850,000 to successful applicants under the Equine Technical and Equine Breeding Scheme 2024.
This allocation follows a competitive application process. The scheme aims to provide financial support to help improve quality equine breeding by optimising genetics, data collection, facilitating research and supporting infrastructure in the non-thoroughbred horse sector. The scheme also supports initiatives in the area of breeding, promotion, marketing for studbook development. Under the scheme, there are three programme headings: General Programme; Training/Education Programme; and Research into Equine Diseases Programmes.
The Minister said:
“The sport horse industry makes a significant contribution to our agricultural sector with an unrivalled reputation for producing world class horses both for the home market and export. I am delighted to announce the successful applicants for funding under the Scheme for 2024. The funding is provided to ensure our sport horse industry remains at the very top of international standards. This ongoing commitment and support to the equine sector in the areas of studbooks and breeding, education and research demonstrates my commitment to the ongoing development of the equine sector.”
This year more than €850,000 has been approved for the delivery of 38 projects. A total of 9 organisations are benefiting from the scheme. Applications received included creating genotype profiles, parentage testing, inspections for classification within breeding books, breed society operations, educational activities and research into equine diseases.
The Minister added:
“I am aware of the valuable projects that have been funded over the last number of years and the benefits they have provided to the equine sector. I look forward to the delivery of the projects funded under the 2024 scheme.”
