The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, and the Minister of State for the Gaeltacht and Sport, Jack Chambers TD, have welcomed the Government's decision to develop a deep water quay at Ros an Mhíl in the Connemara Gaeltacht.
Minister McConalogue today announced that a deep water quay facility is to be built at the State-owned Fishery Harbour Centre at Ros an Mhíl, Galway. The project will be funded through the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme.
Minister Martin said:
“This is a strategic development to support, sustain and enable enterprise, employment, community and carbon reduction developments in the Gaeltacht and entire western region. There is now potential to develop Ros an Mhíl as a centre to support the offshore wind industry and create hundreds of renewable energy jobs in the Galway Gaeltacht.”
Minister of State Chambers said:
“This aligns to the development of An Ghaeltacht Ghlas (the Green Gaeltacht), a key component of Údarás na Gaeltachta’s Strategic Plan 2021 – 2025, and the efforts of An tÚdarás in reducing its own carbon footprint and those of clients and the wider Gaeltacht community.”
A report commissioned by Údarás na Gaeltachta last year showed that the development of Ros an Mhíl in the Galway Gaeltacht as a prime location and strategic hub with the potential to create up to 900 jobs in supporting the offshore wind industry and marine renewable energy.
