Today the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in partnership with the Housing Agency has issued a Stakeholder Notice with additional details regarding a new Croí Cónaithe (Cities) Scheme that will help kick start unactivated planning permissions for build to sell apartments in the 5 cities - Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Waterford and Galway. The scheme will assist in addressing the on-going viability challenges for such developments nationally by providing direct but targeted supports, while benefiting the end consumer in terms of additional apartments for purchase in areas of high demand.
Since launching the Department’s Housing for All Plan in September 2021, work has been ongoing on the structure and criteria for the new Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme. Significant progress has been made, and the Department will launch a ‘Call for Proposals’ for its Croí Cónaithe Scheme in January 2022.
On December 10th 2021, the Department of Housing, in conjunction with the Housing Agency, held a consultation workshop with 31 industry experts.
Commenting Minister Darragh O’Brien TD said:
“This early consultation between my Department, the Housing Agency and a wide range of stakeholders is important in progressing the collaborative and strategic development of this initiative. Its future success depends on open discussion with a broad range of sectors and I look forward to launching the Croí Cónaithe (Cities) Fund early in the New Year.”
“The Croí Cónaithe (Cities) Fund is a key action in the Government’s Housing for All plan. We want to see people making apartments, in high density areas, their home. The steps we are taking now are to ensure there are sufficient apartments in high density areas for ‘build to sell’, sold at rates which buyers can afford. This measure is key to meeting our housing targets, as set out in Housing for All.”
The initial Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme will focus on Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and Dublin. Further details about the Croí Cónaithe Cities Scheme will be available on its official launch in January 2022.
