The Department of Health in conjunction with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland conducted a Public Consultation on Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling, Nutrient Profiles, Origin Labelling and Date Marking in Quarter 1, 2021. The public consultation sought to gather views of relevant stakeholders and interested parties ahead of the proposal of changes to the current rules on the labelling of pre-packed food products under Regulation (EU) 1169/2011, known as the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) Regulation. The published report summarises the submissions made to the public consultation.
As part of the EU’s ‘Farm to Fork Strategy’, which aims to create a food system which is fair, healthy, and environmentally friendly, the European Commission will propose revisions to labelling rules within the FIC Regulation to better support consumers to make more informed choices for the benefit of their health and the environment.
The submissions to this consultation are helping to inform the development of a national position on what the food labelling changes should be. Consultation with stakeholders will continue in 2022, both at national and EU level.
