The Programme for Government committed to ‘Consider the report on the future of the Western Rail Corridor and take appropriate action’ . The report referred to is known as the ‘EY Report’, commissioned by Iarnród Éireann and formally submitted to the Department in July 2020.
In line with a decision of the previous Government, this report was subject to an independent review commissioned by the Department and conducted by JASPERS (Joint Assistance to Support Projects in the European Regions), an EU/EIB agency.
The conclusions of both the ‘EY Report’ and the ‘JASPERS Review’ have been noted by Government and, as committed by the Minister, both reports are published here, available at the links below.
Minister Ryan has informed Government of a proposed Strategic Rail Review of the inter-urban and inter-regional rail network taking cognisance of the need for balanced regional development and cross-border connectivity. This Strategic Rail Review will be conducted on an all-island basis and the Department of Transport and the Department for Infrastructure (Northern Ireland) are co-operating on the development of appropriate terms of reference with a view to commencing the study in 2021.
