Director of Localise Youth Volunteering, Derek Cleary, on the aims, and potential outcomes/transformative effects of the new MyVP app in development with DCU which receives funding from the Public Service Innovation Fund 2024:
"The National Youth Volunteer Portfolio (MyVP) is designed to tackle the challenge of recognising and valuing young people's volunteering efforts, with a specific emphasis on promoting socio-economic equity in further and higher education. It functions as a digital repository for documenting volunteering achievements, skills endorsements, reflections, and aspirations.
Through integration into governmental digital infrastructure, MyVP aims to enhance its versatility and applicability across different contexts, ensuring that all young people, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds, have equal access to opportunities.
MyVP brings forth several advantages for the public. Firstly, it facilitates the creation of comprehensive life records, acknowledging not only academic and professional milestones but also personal growth through volunteering. This aspect is particularly advantageous for youth from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who may encounter additional barriers to educational opportunities.
By valuing and nurturing talents through volunteerism, MyVP endeavours to improve social mobility and break down these barriers, empowering all youth to realise their potential. Additionally, by promoting a holistic understanding of education, MyVP cultivates informed and engaged citizens who can positively contribute to society.
The project's targeted approach to diversifying representation in higher education further fosters inclusivity across socio-economic and migrant diversity spectrums. Furthermore, MyVP's integration with existing platforms at both national and EU levels enhances its scalability and accessibility, ensuring widespread availability of its benefits.
MyVP exemplifies public service innovation and transformation by leveraging digital solutions to effectively address societal challenges, with a focus on promoting socio-economic equity. By offering a digital platform that seamlessly integrates with existing systems such as the 'Life Events' Government Digital Wallet - to streamline recognition and facilitate access to educational opportunities, MyVP redefines conventional approaches to acknowledging and valuing individuals' contributions, especially in the realm of volunteerism.
Through collaborative efforts and advancements in technology, MyVP pioneers a more inclusive and impactful solution, ultimately advancing the objectives of public service innovation and transformation for the betterment of society as a whole."
