The IBRC Commission of Investigation was established in June 2015 following consultations with Opposition representatives and resolutions made by the Dáil and Seanad.
During the course of 2019, the timeframe for the Commission to report had been extended until the end of March 2020. However on 27 February 2020 the Commission made a formal request under section 6 (6) of the Commissions of Investigation Act 2004 for an extension until the end of December 2020. In view of the pressures arising in relation to Covid-19 and talks on the formation of a new Government, the Commission’s timeframe for reporting was extended until end-June and then end-September 2020 pending consultation with Oireachtas representatives.
On 18 September 2020 the Commission made a further formal request for an extension to its timeframe for reporting, this time until 30 April 2021.
The Taoiseach has granted the Commission’s request and has also decided to publish the Commission’s Seventh and Eighth Interim Reports, in which it requested the extensions of its timeframe for reporting. Submission of such Interim Reports is a requirement under Section 33 (3) of the Act when an extension of a timeframe for reporting is requested by a Commission.
