There are a number of inhabited islands around the coast of Ireland. During elections, polling places are set up on 19 of these islands, so residents do not have to travel to the mainland to vote.
Part 8 of the Electoral Reform Act 2022 amended the electoral codes to provide that polling on these islands will take place on the same day as the rest of the country. Where necessary, there is facility to shorten polling hours on these islands in the event that local circumstances require it.
On 21 May, 2024, the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD, made an Order appointing the hours during which polling shall take place on certain islands.
The voting times for islands in the polls in the local and European elections on Friday 07 June 2024 are :
Inishboffin - 07.00 a.m. – 9.00 p.m.
Inis Bigil - 9.30 a.m. - 6.30 p.m.
