The Labour Employer Economic Forum (LEEF) which comprises representatives from the government, employer and trade unions met today. The LEEF is the structure for tripartite dialogue on economic and employment issues as they affect the labour market.
As well as the Taoiseach, the government was represented by the Tánaiste and the Ministers for Environment, Climate and Communications, Finance, and Public Expenditure and Reform.
The meeting received a briefing on the latest economic position and outlook, as reflected in the draft Stability Programme Update which is being published by the government today.
There was also a general discussion on the economic outlook and inflationary pressures arising, in particular, from the invasion of Ukraine. The series of measures introduced by Government in response to these pressures, including the reductions in VAT rates and additional Fuel Allowance payments agreed by Government today were noted.
There was agreement on the serious nature of the economic risks facing Ireland in the period ahead, and the potential impacts on the labour market, employment and living standards.
It was agreed therefore that the members of LEEF would enter a process of dialogue over the next few weeks to explore the potential for developing an agreed approach to managing and responding to these challenges and pressures in a strategic and sustainable way.
