The study includes an assessment of the wider economic and environmental costs/benefits of extending the gas network, the regulatory considerations that may apply to a prospective extension project, and possible funding options.
It should be noted that this study was undertaken in the context of the national climate and energy policies that were in place in 2018. In the period since, there has been significant development of national policy including the 2020 Programme for Government commitments to an average 7% per annum reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions from 2021 to 2030 (a 51% reduction over the decade) and to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
