The Department of Foreign Affairs have entered into a Data Sharing Agreement under the Data Sharing and Governance Act 2019 with the Department of Social Protection. The Department of Foreign Affairs provides consular services for Irish citizens and this activity necessitates the processing of personal data.
In the event of the death or serious injury of an Irish citizen abroad, the department provides details of the incident (including contact details of next of kin) to An Garda Síochána.
Occasionally, in the event of the death or serious injury of an Irish citizen abroad, where details of next of kin are not clear, the department may need to process personal data in order to identify the individual’s next of kin. This is not always possible to do using only the department’s dataset. Therefore, it requires the General Register Office (GRO) assistance by searching and providing data it holds on close relatives of the deceased or seriously injured person. This information is then combined with the data held by the Department of Foreign Affairs in order to identify next of kin.
