A national monument is a monument, or the remains of a monument, the preservation of which is a matter of national importance by reason of its historic, architectural, traditional, artistic or archaeological interest.
For any works at or in proximity to a national monument in the ownership or guardianship of the Minister or a Local Authority, or those subject to a preservation order or temporary preservation order, the prior written consent of the Minister is required.
An application for Ministerial Consent should be made on the form below:
Many of the known archaeological monuments in Ireland are Recorded Monuments and any person proposing to carry out work at or in relation to a Recorded Monument is required to give notice in writing to the Minister two months before commencing that work. This is to allow the National Monuments Service time to consider the proposed work and how best to protect of the monument.
