On 22 April 2024, the Government approved the drafting of Bill making amendments to the Air Pollution act based on a General Scheme. This amendment Bill is intended to focus on measures to enhance the enforcement capacity of local authorities and support the effective implementation of the solid fuel regulations while also delivering key aspects of Ireland’s Clean Air Strategy with the aim of maximising the health benefits for the Irish public from continuous improvements to the air that they breathe.
The Bill is expected to enable efficient and effective enforcement of the regulations and provide the necessary tools to ensure the legislative powers are in place to deal with emerging air quality issues as they arise.
The General Scheme and associated Regulatory Impact Analysis are published below. The General Scheme will be the basis of the Air Pollution Act (Amendment) Bill 2024 which will be brought to Government before being published and introduced in the Oireachtas.
