This protocol applies to all Beneficiaries of Temporary Protection (BOTPs). All BOTPs requiring assistance with accommodation, will be offered suitable short-term accommodation. The determination of what is suitable is decided upon by the Department. The geographic location, type of accommodation and duration of stay will depend on what is available at that time.
Due to the significant number of persons arriving on a daily basis, and the logistical and safety challenges in holding large numbers in a transit area, it is really important that people are moved through temporary protection centres as quickly and safely as possible.
As a result, the Department has put in place procedures to ensure that short-term accommodation is allocated in an equitable manner and a refusals protocol has been introduced as part of the approach. Exceptions will only be made for those with a medical vulnerability. Such cases will be subject to separate arrangements.
Due to the acute shortage of accommodation available, if a person refuses an offer of accommodation they will not receive further offers from the Department. We cannot provide alternative accommodation to people for reasons of employment, school, family reunification or other non-medical reasons. A person who refuses accommodation must not attend Citywest Transit Hub as they will not be permitted access in these circumstances.
In such circumstances, and at all times, people have the option to secure accommodation privately and/or seek assistance from other state supports for their accommodation needs.
