Coroner Consultation Advisory Committee: Call for expressions of interest

A programme of reform will commence in 2023 to address identified issues and drive innovative change across the Coroner Service.

As part of this process, a public consultation on the reform of the Coroner Service will take place later this year. The consultation will seek people’s views in relation to a number of aspects of the coronial service, including the structure of the service and key ancillary services such as pathology and client/user engagement.

The public consultation process will be vital in identifying how the Coroner Service will operate in the future.

Role of Advisory Committee

The Department of Justice has established an Advisory Committee to support the consultation process.

Members will include representatives from the Department of Justice, the Coroners Society of Ireland, the Department of Health, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, the Health Service Executive, An Garda Síochána, the Office of the State Pathologist, the Royal College of Physicians - Faculty of Pathology, and an independent expert.

The role of the committee will be to:

Provide views and advice in relation to the consultation process.
Provide advice on draft reform proposals following receipt of submissions to the consultation.

The Department of Justice is seeking expressions of interest from members of the public who have had experience of the coronial service and would like to sit on the Advisory Committee.

It is intended that the committee will meet on four occasions throughout the consultation process, with the first meeting in early September.

The extended closing date for expressions of interest is Monday 11th September at 5pm . Late applications will not be considered.

Notes for applicants

It is anticipated that the first meeting of the Advisory Committee will take place in the week beginning 24th September 2023. Participants will be required to be available during this time.
It is intended that the first meeting will be held on an in person basis in Dublin. Meetings thereafter may be held in person or virtually.
Reasonable accommodations will be made for persons who require assistance or are unable to attend meetings in person.
Participation in the Advisory Committee is voluntary and participants will not be reimbursed for travel / subsistence expenses. Light refreshments will be provided for those attending in-person meetings.
