Project title: Grass to Gas - Exploring the Energy Potential of Public Lands
Organisation: Kildare County Council
Sector: Local Government
Amount awarded: €50,000
Kildare County Council will investigate the potential for managed green spaces to contribute to climate action and climate mitigation opportunities. Its research would contribute to the wider challenge of bio-methane production from the agriculture sector and will review potential impacts from of uncultivated lands, to reduce over reliance on agricultural land for energy and safeguard it for food production.
Intended outcomes:
1. Increase understanding and awareness of the potential for domestically produced sustainable clean energy and the circular economy. Increase the viability of the Anaerobic Digestion system at scale in Ireland.
2. Support the promotion in the potential use of the resulting energy to power public service vehicles and heat homes and will make the project possibilities visible to all citizens.
3. Reduce consumption consciously through engagement to assist in reaching National 2050 Climate Objective.
4. Support and inspire other stakeholders (businesses, citizens, universities etc.) through adaptation and mitigation measures to decarbonise their operations and services.
5. Potential capacity to decrease the cost of fuel nationally by producing a domestic energy product that can be stored on the national network and consumed.
6. Provide stakeholders with an analytical tool to assess the location and size of Anaerobic Digestors and infrastructural needs for future strategies, policies, and capital expenditure.
