The National Youth Assembly on Climate is a joint initiative led by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications under the National Dialogue on Climate Action (NDCA) and is a commitment under the Climate Action Plan 2023. The National Youth Assembly on Climate 2023 convened on Saturday, 11 March 2023, from 11am to 4pm.
This report presents the National Youth Assembly on Climate’s recommendations for consideration to include in Ireland’s Climate Action Plan 2024. The key recommendations from the Youth Assembly relate to the areas of sustainable transport, circular economy, and communication, engagement, and climate literacy.
This year’s Assembly suggested that there be an increase in public transport routes and better incentives for public transport. In relation to the circular economy the delegates proposed a tax or tariff on fast fashion producers and greater financial incentives for businesses to improve practices of circular economy. The Assembly recommended that a climate education programme be put in place and that cohesive media and communication strategy be implemented.
The Report of the National Youth Assembly on Climate provides a detailed record of the Assembly discussions, captures the views of young people from across Ireland and reflects the concerns of young people in relation to climate issues.
