Directive (EU) 2019/944 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on common rules for the internal market for electricity, amending Directive 2012/27/EU (directive) and Regulation (EU) 2019/943 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on the internal market for electricity (regulation) form part of the Clean Energy Package, which consists of eight legislative instruments.
The package is designed to facilitate the transition away from fossil fuels towards cleaner energy and to deliver on the EU’s Paris Agreement commitments for reducing greenhouse gas emissions while ensuring affordable, secure and sustainable energy for its citizens. The EU adopted and finalised this comprehensive update of its existing energy legislative framework in July 2019.
Further to our notice of 23 February and subsequent stakeholder engagement, further stakeholder engagement on the process and timelines in respect of legislative drafting for the transposition of the directive, including licensing arrangements for electricity undertakings engaged in aggregation, demand response and energy storage, and the regulatory framework for market participants, will take place in the coming weeks, including possible seminars.
