The EU Policy and Institutions Unit maintains an overview of policy trends and development at EU-level, and works to ensure whole-of-government coherence in cross-cutting EU policies. It provides oversight and strategic focus on issues including the Union’s budget and recovery package, Eurozone matters, the internal market, and climate. It also supports the Taoiseach in bilateral engagement with EU Heads of State and Government and in engagement with EU institutions.
The Europe Unit supports the Taoiseach as a member of the European Council and provides oversight and strategic direction on policy issues such as international trade; security and defence; and external relations, including EU-UK relations. It also works to develop our strategic engagement with the wider European neighbourhood and supports the work of Cabinet Committee on Europe.
The International Section supports and advises the Taoiseach on international policy and in his role to protect Ireland’s interests, to promote our values and to maximize our influence, in his wider international engagements as Head of Government both at home and abroad, in supporting economic growth and trade, promoting international peace and security, and strengthening Ireland's strategic bilateral and multilateral relationships.
