The role of the Water Advisory Unit (WAU) is to lead on Ireland’s Water Framework Directive planning process including overseeing the preparation and coordination of implementation of river basin management plans and associated programmes of measures; compliance with the requirements of the Drinking Water and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directives and managing related EU Infringements; preparing the climate adaptation plan in relation to water quality and water services infrastructure; the strategic and technical oversight of Irish Water work programmes; to manage the Water Advisory Unit, including the Department’s water policy advisers; to oversee the provision of key technical expertise to the Water Division; liaise and participate, as required, in water stakeholder engagement and the cross-divisional and cross departmental groups relevant to Water Policy.
