Responsibility at Assistant Secretary level for Media & Broadcasting.
This Unit is responsible for the following
Development of the legislative and regulatory framework for broadcasting and for certain media in Ireland.
The development of online safety policy, including participation on relevant interdepartmental committees, in relation to the interdepartmental Action Plan for Online Safety, and in providing the Secretariat to the National Advisory Council for Online Safety.
Enactment of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill, which will transpose the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive, establish a multi-person Media Commission as a regulator, including an Online Safety Commissioner, dissolve the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, and put in place a framework for the regulation of online safety.
Operating the media mergers review process.
Developing policy in relation to the funding of the public service broadcasters, RTÉ & TG4 and the development of the broadcasting sector in general. They form policy on new media, oversee the media mergers process and interact with the EU and Council of Europe on broadcasting and media matters.
Corporate governance responsibilities in relation to RTÉ, TG4 and the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
