The position of Deputy Secretary is a key element in the the strategic leadership of the Department with particular focus on delivery of the Department’s role at the centre of the criminal justice system. The comprehensive change programme now underway is being led by the Secretary General, but requires proactive engagement by the Deputy Secretary as a champion of change and a driver of a new management ethos.
The Deputy Secretary contributes to the development, implementation and critical review of policies and programmes in the areas of crime, the criminal justice system, including policing and the management of offenders, often with a cross-organisational dimension, or involving a whole of Government approach to problem solving.
