The Secondment Scheme is designed to facilitate the temporary assignment of a teacher to a position in an external organisation (host organisation), where the work to be carried out by the seconded teacher is of clear benefit to the education system and/or is in the public interest.
A secondment must be based on agreement between the teacher, the employer and the relevant host organisation.
Secondment arrangements are subject to approval by the Department of Education or the relevant Education and Training Board (ETB).

Due to legislative changes, employers are advised of an amendment to Circular 0029/2018 titled “Secondment Scheme for Registered Teachers in Recognised Primary and Post Primary Schools”. Please refer to Information Note TC/IN 0003/2023.
A teacher must complete Part 1 of the Application Form contained in Circular 0029/2018 . The host organisation must complete Part 2 and the employer must complete Part 3 of the Application Form. The fully completed Application Form (Parts 1, 2 and 3) must be submitted to the relevant section in the Department by 1st May.
