Geographical Indication (GI) identifies a spirit drink as originating in the territory of a country, or a region or locality in that territory. This is an EU quality scheme which aims to protect the names of specific products to promote their unique characteristics, linked to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how.
Geographical Indication spirits placed on the market must be verified as complying with the relevant Geographical Indication technical file. The technical file sets out the technical specification of the product.
The file includes:
- details of the principal physical and chemical characteristics
- a description of the geographic area
- a description of the method for obtaining the spirit drink
Producers must undergo a verification process for:
- Irish Whiskey
- Irish Cream
- Irish Poteen/Poitín
