The General Register Office can only complete new orders for certificates, and do not have any access to orders already processed by the HSE.
We will process your order as soon as possible, but there may be a waiting period due to the significant increase in demand.
You can order a certificate of birth, death, marriage, adoption, civil partnership and stillbirth from the General Register Office by downloading and emailing the completed form to GROonlinepayments@welfare.ie
Application for certificate of Birth/Death/Marriage/Adoption/Civil Partnership (by email)
Updated: May 2022
Please download this form, follow instructions and email to GROonlinepayments@welfare.ie
Alternatively you can order a certificate on the HSE website's online application page.
If you require a multilingual standard form you must order this with the certificate.
GRO will contact you with a pay link when the record has been found.
When you have completed the online payment, we will post your certificate to the address nominated in your email.
Following a search of the relevant register the General Register Office can provide a letter confirming that someone’s birth, marriage or death was not registered in Ireland, this letter is called a letter of 'No Trace'. There is a fee of €20 per letter, this fee includes the cost of the search and the issuing of the 'No Trace' letter.
Once all required details are forwarded to and examined by this office a payment link will be sent by email from 'Worldpay' which is a secure payment site. Once your payment is processed the letter will be prepared and sent by post.
Please note that this letter is only issued in English. If you require this document to be apostilled, you will have to contact the Department of Foreign Affairs to arrange this separately.
In order for this office to carry out a search of the relevant register the following particulars are required depending on which 'No Trace' letter you require:
Birth:
• full name of the person
• date of birth
• place of birth
• mothers name including maiden name
• fathers name
• name and current postal address of person requesting the letter
• years of search to be completed
Marriage:
• full name - to include forename, middle name(s) and surname
• date of birth
• current postal address (address the letter is to be posted to)
• years of search to be completed – please note the legal age to marry in Ireland is 18
Death:
• full name of the person, maiden and married (if appropriate)
• date of birth
• date of death
• place of death
• name and current postal address of person requesting the letter
• years of search to be completed
Please forward all details to GRO@welfare.ie and clearly outline which letter you require.
Failure to provide the required particulars will lead to a delay in processing your application.
A Multilingual Standard Form (MSF) can be obtained when ordering certificates and can be used when presenting certificates to authorities in an EU member state. MSFs should accompany certificates to avoid translation requirements.
