Carer’s Leave is a statutory leave of absence for up to a maximum of 104 weeks to allow a teacher/SNA a period of unpaid leave so they can provide full-time care and attention to a relevant person. A relevant person is a person deemed to be in need of this level of care by the Department of Social Protection.

A teacher must make an application on the DSP CARB1 Form . On approval, they must then complete the Application Form on page 99 of Circular 0054/2019 and return it to their employer at least 6 weeks before the planned commencement date.
An SNA must make an application on the DSP CARB1 Form . On approval, they must then complete the Application form at Appendix A of Circular 0033/2023 and return it to their employer at least 6 weeks before the planned commencement date.
