The Shass Landslide Scheme is being implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in response to a localised landslide which originated on Shass Mountain, close to the village of Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim on the 28th June 2020.
The objective of the DAFM Shass Landslide Scheme is to provide financial aid to individuals whose land agricultural lands were affected with peat silt and sludge as a result of the landslide.
The Scheme is open to landowners, BPS applicants and forest contract holders whose lands were affected by the landslide overspill which occurred on June 28th 2020.
There are 4 measures under this scheme . 3 of these measures are currently open for applications with the forestry reconstitution measure to open at a later stage.
1. Hardship Payment Measure
a. Financial assistance under this measure will only be paid to 2020 BPS claimants who had claimed parcel/s directly impacted by the overspill from the landslide in 2020.
b. Or individuals who held forestry contracts for 2020 on the land impacted by the overspill.
2. Agricultural Land Measure
a. Financial assistance under this measure will only be paid to Landowners of the parcel or holders of commonage shares directly impacted by the overspill from the landslide.
b. The affected land must have been declared on a 2020 BPS application
3. Fencing and Gateways Measure
a. Financial assistance under this measure will only be paid to Landowners of the parcel directly impacted by the overspill from the landslide.
b. The affected land must have been declared on a 2020 BPS application
c. Commonage and forestry land is not eligible for the fencing and gateways measure.
4. Forestry Reconstitution
For Forestry Contract holders, a forest reconstitution payment of €4,500 per ha is available; a payment of €3,500/ha will be made in year 1 and €1,000/ha in year 4.
The Department will be writing to farmers affected by the landslide with details of the scheme.
1. Hardship payment - €5,000 is available to BPS claimants of affected lands for 2020 and to Forestry Contract holders of affected land.
2. Agricultural Land - €12,355/ha, or part thereof, is available to the owners of agricultural land or holders of commonage shares.
3. Fencing and Gateways measures - €6.75 (ex VAT) per liner metre is available for fencing off of the overspill areas with sheep wire and 1 strand of barbed wire.
One gateway per field division can be funded at a rate of €343.85 (ex VAT), including hanger and closer. Payment under this measure shall be to the owners of agricultural land.
4. Forestry Contract holders - a forest reconstitution payment of €4,500 per ha is available; €3,500/ha in year 1 and €1,000/ha in year 4.
There is a cap of €20,000 per applicant across all 4 measures.

The closing date for applications under this scheme is close of business Monday the 30th January, 2023. The closing date for the Forestry Reconstitution Measure is close of business Monday the 15th May, 2023.
