Ireland has a community rated voluntary private health insurance market and so it is not compulsory for anyone living here to take out a health insurance policy.
There is also no obligation on individuals in Ireland to engage in public preventive healthcare measures.
However, if a person takes out private health insurance, their insurance company may provide cover for preventive check-ups aimed at protecting their health. Therefore, EU citizens who want to undergo a selected preventive check-up or treatment with a healthcare provider in Ireland should contact their health insurance company. They could also consult the national contact point of their home Member State about the possibility of coverage or reimbursement for the costs of these procedures.
