Consumer Protection

The Department of Finance is responsible for ensuring that there is an appropriate legal framework in place to ensure that consumers of financial services are properly protected and that financial institutions are regulated in an appropriate manner.

Part of its role involves liaison with other organisations with regard to consumer protection in the area of personal banking, the purchase of financial products and financial issues generally.

These organisations include:

  • Central Bank of Ireland
  • Financial Services Ombudsman
  • Competition and Consumer Protection Commission

The Department also ran the public awareness campaign on switching bank accounts, credit cards and mortgages.
