Minister D’Arcy welcomes announcement by MIBI on no separate green cards being required in the event of a no-deal Brexit

Minister of State Michael D’Arcy has welcomed the announcement by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) today, Friday 23rd August, that an agreement has been reached between transport authorities in the UK and Ireland that Irish-registered vehicle driven in the UK, including Northern Ireland, will no longer require a “Green Card” if they have a valid Irish insurance disc, in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Speaking about this announcement today, Minister D’Arcy said that:

“I welcome the announcement that MIBI have received clarification from the UK authorities that green cards will not be required by the majority of Irish motorists travelling to the UK or crossing the border to Northern Ireland. As Minister of State with responsibility for insurance policy, I have raised the issue of green cards with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport who have been actively engaged with the European Commission on the matter of green cards. This is a very positive development.”

Prior to the original Brexit deadline of 29th March earlier this year, there was a possibility that all Irish-registered vehicles would require a green card when travelling in the UK and Northern Ireland in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

“As we approach the deadline of 31st October for the UK to leave the European Union, we must be prepared for all eventualities in the event of a no-deal Brexit. The announcement that a valid Irish insurance discs will be accepted as proof of cover when travelling in the UK or Northern Ireland without having to have a green card will certainly be welcome news for motorists following the uncertainty earlier this year.”

UK registered vehicles will still require a Green Card if they plan on visiting European Union countries, including Ireland, after a no-deal Brexit. For more information please visit the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland website at https://www.mibi.ie/brexit.1760.html.
