Minister Lawless attending Informal Meeting of EU Ministers for Research and Innovation in Warsaw

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless is attending the Informal Meeting of EU Ministers for Research and Innovation in Warsaw to engage with his EU counterparts on two key policy issues central to Ireland’s research and innovation priorities.

The first is an initial discussion on the development of a European strategy for start-ups and scale-ups. The second is a debate on the strategic contribution of the next framework programme for research and innovation to Europe’s competitiveness.

EU Research and Innovation Ministers held constructive discussions on Monday 10 March at a working dinner at the start of the informal ministerial meeting held in Poland which currently holds the presidency of the EU.

Minister Lawless commented ahead of the meeting:

“I’m looking forward to the policy debates including discussions on the Warsaw Declaration, which is expected to be endorsed by Ministers.

“The policy discussion on the framework programme is particularly timely, given that the European Commission is due to publish its proposals on the next EU budget this summer.

“There is significant uncertainty around the funding of this vital programme, and I strongly believe that a dedicated, standalone framework programme with a ring-fenced budget is essential to ensure the continued impact of research and innovation on broader policy objectives.

“We must ensure that EU research and innovation policies and instruments are fit for purpose, and I will be advocating for this during the discussions.

“I look forward to the productive engagement with my EU colleagues and to furthering Ireland’s collaboration with our EU partners on these crucial issues.”
