Introduction
The Spending Review process aims to improve how public expenditure is allocated across all areas of Government. 2017 was the first year of the current three year process. 21 papers were published covering topics ranging from enterprise supports to the State’s contribution to the funding of public transport. In some instances, these papers laid the foundation for further analysis in 2018 and 2019.

The objectives of this paper are to systematically examine the baseline expenditure in the acute hospital sector in Ireland and identify trends and drivers in the hospitals expenditure.
Future Sustainability of Pharmaceutical Expenditure
The objectives of this paper are to provide an overview of the composition of pharmaceutical spend in Ireland, set out the key trends in the pharmaceutical area, summarise the future trends in the pharmaceutical sector in terms of expenditure pressures and set out components of the reform agenda to manage growth in spend on pharmaceuticals in the future.
