Project title: Developing an Ambulatory Pleural Effusion Service to Reduce Hospital Admissions and Improve End-of-Life Experiences

This project envisages to build upon existing clinical expertise and organisational infrastructure to create an innovative new service for patients with pleural effusions, which will improve patient experiences and reduce the cost associated with management of this condition. The project is expected to reduce pleural effusion admissions by 30.5%, equating to potential annual savings in 1170 bed days or a reduction of €376,672 in operational costs.

Intended outcomes:

1. Development of new collaborative relationships between the SJH Respiratory Team, MACS Team and CIT Team and between SJH and Tallaght University Hospital.

2. Improved efficiency as indicated by hospital bed days saved, interval assessments based upon number of procedures completed and re-audit of pleural effusion management.

3. Improved patient experiences, measured through patient feedback questionnaires and engagement.

4. Predicated annual cost savings of €376,000, measured through interval assessments on the number of procedures completed and re-audit of pleural effusion management.
