The Offshore Renewable Energy Development Plan (OREDP) identifies the opportunity for the following:
- the sustainable development of Ireland's abundant offshore renewable energy resources
- to increase indigenous production of renewable electricity
- to contribute to reductions in our greenhouse gas emissions
- to improve the security of our energy supply
- creating jobs in the green economy
The OREDP sets out key principles, policy actions and enablers for delivery of Ireland's significant potential in this area. In this way, the OREDP provides a framework for the sustainable development of Ireland's offshore renewable energy resources.
Under the OREDP, Ireland is developing a suite of world class test infrastructure to encourage the development of our offshore renewable energy potential.
Following a public consultation, an Interim Review of the OREDP was published in May 2018.
Consultation Documents and all responses received can be found on the Public consultation page
Given Ireland’s increased ambition in Offshore Renewables and significant technology advances in recent years, together with the development of Ireland’s National Marine Planning Framework, work on a new OREDP will commence soon.
Strategic Environmental Assessment
Included in Part Two of the OREDP are the findings and key recommendations of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Appropriate Assessment (AA) carried out for the OREDP, which form an integral part of the plan. A public consultation was carried out as part of these processes, and with relevant Departments and Agencies. The outputs of the SEA and AA processes are set out in the following documents as Appendices to the OREDP
Natura Impact Statement (revised 2013) - this is an appraisal of the potential effects of the OREDP on the interest features of Natura 2000 sites to inform the Appropriate Assessment (Appendix 4).
More information on the OREDP Environmental Report is available on the SEAI website.
The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) aims to accelerate and enhance support for the research, development, testing and deployment of wave and tidal energy devices through financial and testing infrastructure support.
SEAI provides financial support for wave and tidal ocean research, development and for demonstration projects through the National Energy Research Development and Demonstration Fund (RD&D). The RD&D Funding Programme invests in innovative energy projects which contribute to Ireland's transition to a clean and secure energy future.
SEAI also provides support for the development of appropriate testing infrastructure in Ireland and supports the development of the Lir National Ocean Test Facility in UCC in Cork; the Marine Institutes quarter scale ocean test site in Galway Bay and the Atlantic Marine Energy Test Site in Co. Mayo.
